Alterations to bowel control can be a serious effect of cauda equina syndrome as well as an indicator that the patient may well be developing the condition.
Someone unfortunate enough to suffer with permanent cauda equina syndrome may find that they are experiencing severe symptoms associated with their bowel function.
They may have lost the ability to prevent the passing of both wind and faeces, rendering them effectively incontinent.
Not only is this extremely distressing but it can affect the individual’s ability to work, travel and socialise.
A person’s awareness of sensation around the anus and control of bowel movements is dependent on the healthy and effective functioning of the cauda equina nerves.
If those nerves, located at the base of the spine, become compressed, due perhaps to a herniated disc or inflammation of the spine, their ability to receive instructions and send messages between the brain and the bowel can become impaired.
Thus, the patient may lose control of that region and those functions.
Consequently, when a patient attends their GP or A&E practitioner complaining of loss of sensation around the anus, it should be recognised as a possible indicator of cauda equina syndrome.
If other symptoms are present – such as pain and tingling in one or both legs and possible urinary difficulties – the patient might be asked if they have sensation around the anus in order to gain additional evidence of possible cauda equina syndrome. The patient might undergo a pin prick test to check the level of sensation around the anus and perineum.
The medical professional may also carry out a test of the patient’s anal tone by inserting a finger into the patient’s anus. A reduction in anal tone may suggest a loss of control of bowel movements.
Recognising cauda equina syndrome early gives the patient the best chance of a good long-term outcome as emergency surgery at the right moment can bring about a restoration of nerve function.
On the other hand, a failure to recognise key symptoms can lead to a lifetime of bowel, bladder and sexual dysfunction.
If your red flag symptoms of cauda equina syndrome were not recognised, leaving you with the long-term effects identified above, you may be entitled to make a claim for compensation.
